Lady A’s Charles Kelley has shared a striking before-and-after on Instagram as he marks his continuing sobriety.
In a post on Aug. 31, the 44-year-old singer paired a recent sunny selfie with his wife, Cassie McConnell, with an old photo from when he was still drinking. He wrote that his “best filter” is simply not drinking. His wife had asked whether he ever looks at old photos and doesn’t recognize himself, he explained, and this was the one. He added that looking healthier is the least of the good things sobriety has brought him, but that the photo is a helpful reminder of where he doesn’t want to go back.
Fellow country artists, including Ruston Kelly, posted words of support in the comments.
His path to sobriety
Kelley has been open about his recovery and has credited sobriety with saving his marriage, saying he doesn’t believe his wife would have stayed if he hadn’t quit. He turned the experience into his 2025 solo album, Songs for a New Moon, an upbeat, ’80s-synth-tinged record about getting a second chance. He told PEOPLE at the time that making music helped him through the process.
Our take
Sharing a “before” photo takes courage, especially for a musician whose career grew up around a party-heavy tour lifestyle. Posts like this can make a real difference for fans who are struggling.
